5 Flower Facts you Need to Know!

By Ashley

We know flowers are fantastic to look at and will brighten any room, but did you know these other amazing facts? We’ve listed 5 of the best below so you can dazzle everyone with your knowledge at your next BBQ...

1. Largest Flower Petal Carpet

On the 26th June this year, an organisation in Italy achieved world record success with a 3,980.84 square foot carpet of flower petals. Over 800 people laid more than 700,000 flower petals which came from roses, gerberas, chrysanthemums, sunflowers and hydrangeas. That’s A LOT of petals!

If you need some help with what to do with your flower petals you’ll find some great ideas here.

2. The Oldest Decorative Plant on Record

We’re so used to decorating our homes with beautiful bunches of flowers that it’s easy to forget that this hasn’t always been the case.

The oldest record of a plant being used decoratively goes to the Ancient Romans. They have been brightening up their surroundings with roses since AD 50. Who knew roses could technically be classed as antique…

3. The World’s Largest Flower

The largest bloom award goes to the Rafflesia arnoldii. This flower is incredibly rare, and is found in the depths of the Indonesian rainforest. It can grow to a HUGE 3 feet across and can weigh up to 15 pounds - that’s the same as a bowling ball or 19 inch flat screen TV!

4. Largest Wedding Bouquet of Flowers

This world record goes to a Canadian lady called Christa Rasanayagam. When she tied the knot she had a 60 metre long bouquet that was made up of 1,500 flowers! It weighed 92 kg (that’s roughly 92 bottles of wine).

She topped off her big day with 79 bridesmaids and 47 groomsmen. We’re guessing she needed this many to help carry her bouquet!

5. The World’s Tallest Flower

At 3 meters high, the tallest flower is the Amorphophallus Titanum (also known as the corpse flower due to its disgusting smell). Nice. It definitely isn’t one to pop in the corner of your living room and show off to your friends!

This flower is also from Indonesia (like the world’s largest flower). We think there must be something in the water!

If you’d like to own a relation of the Amorphophallus Titanum you’ll find some calla lilies here - these smell great though, we promise!
