Don’t Get Caught Out! How to Choose the Perfect Rose This Valentine's Day.

By Ashley

Gone are the days where you could grab a rose from a petrol station on your way home, give it to your good lady and see her melt with desire. A cheap rose might still work for a 16 year old schoolboy, but you’re a man now (with an incredible lady in your life) so you’re going to have to up your game.

Don’t worry - we’ve got your back.

Up until this point you probably think that all roses are the same. They’re not. We’re here to help you spot the valentine’s worthy from the downright insulting so you don’t end up with 5 star accommodation in the doghouse this February 14th.

Up until this point you probably think that all roses are the same. They’re not. We’re here to help you spot the valentine’s worthy from the downright insulting so you don’t end up with 5 star accommodation in the doghouse this February 14th.

Why does it even matter?

You’ve probably read to this point and are thinking ‘this doesn’t apply to me, she doesn’t mind what I get her as long as it’s something’.

Maybe that’s true, but think about it this way: if she got you tickets to see your favourite team play football sat up in the gods, you’d be happy. Now imagine she went the extra mile and got you tickets on the halfway line, the ones that are a few rows back so you have an amazing view of the whole pitch. You’d be really excited wouldn’t you?

Surely you want her to feel this rush of excitement about a gift from you? Most women say they don’t do it, but she will judge you on the flowers you buy. Making the effort will definitely get you some brownie points.

Here’s what you need to do to find the perfect rose

Check the size

All we can say is this. Size matters.

There’s a few different sized roses out there but the big ones are most definitely the best. Roses with large heads and beautiful long stems (called the 'Rhodos Rose', shown in the image on the left) are a winning choice. With half a meter long stems and a head that is 5 x 4 cm, they scream luxury. You can see some here .

The other sizes to look out for are Sweetheart roses (the smallest ones) and Upperclass roses which fall somewhere between the other two. Check what you’re getting before you buy as this will have an impact on the price and overall look of your bouquet.

Check the price

Different sized bouquets will be different prices. If you’re wondering why a bouquet seems quite cheap, check the number of roses in it compared to filler foliage used to make it appear larger.

Traditionally it’s nice to send a dozen red roses, but if you really want to up your game you could splash out for 24. It’s really up to you. Anything that’s 12 or over is sure to impress.

Beware of delivery charges! You might see a nice bunch online that are so much cheaper than everywhere else, but make sure you check the delivery charge. Often to make up for the lower price of the flowers you’ll be stung with a £12 delivery fee. Ouch.

Think about delivery

Delivering her beautiful bunch of roses to the office will certainly take things up an emotional notch.

An office delivery will make it all the more exciting for her because her colleagues will get excited too - they’ll naturally stop work to see what she’s carrying back to her desk. She’ll also receive tons of compliments about her flowers and how lovely you must be to have sent them, so it’s a winning formula.

This Valentine’s Day make sure you treat the gorgeous lady in your life to the type of roses she deserves - a bunch of big, beautiful red ones with free delivery! If you don’t want the hassle of searching high and low for the perfect bunch, why not let Flowers Direct take care of it for you?
