Strelitzias (Birds of Paradise) : Flower FactsOriginsStrelitzia is a genus of four species native to South Africa. It is named after the Meckenburg-Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the England. The genus is known as the bird of paradise flower because of its resemblance to a bird, which shares its name. This is a low maintenance plant that can be grown in gardens. All parts of plants are poisonous if digested. When birds drink the nectar, petals open to cover their feet in pollen. Named Strelitzia after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Streliz, who married King George III to become Queen of England in 1761. Flower Availability and Vase LifeAll year round. Limited availability in summer. 7-14 days. Care and HandlingAvoid temperatures below 45 F. Will show cold damage through browning on the flowers and bracts. Can ooze jelly-like substance, which may be sticky. This can be wiped away carefully. Soak the flower head in warm water for about 20 minutes to help tight sheaths so that flowers can emerge.
