Flowers in the Rosa genus belong to the Rosaceae family, which includes more than 20,000 cultivars commonly called roses. These timelessly beautiful blooms originated more than 4,000 years ago, growing in the fertile land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the Middle East. Today's roses come in many shapes, sizes and colours, including two popular types spray and tea. In the 19th century old scented roses were used to make jelly. The red rose is the symbol of England and is worn on St George's Day.
