Peony is the common name for approximately 33 species of flowers in the Paeonia genus, which belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. The flowers are native to Europe, Asia and North America, and are among the most popular garden flowers. The Japanese protect the earliest peony blooms from the snow by protecting them with individual small thatched shelters. The Chinese also idolised this flower. Peonies are very thirsty flowers, so make sure you top up the vase or bowl. Care and HandlingPetals should be kept dry, as they are prone to mould. Peonies are wilt sensitive, so avoid prolonged periods out of water. Florist Design UsesThese fragrant, massive flowers work well alone in a bouquet or mixed arrangement. The thin stems may require wiring or other support for the heavy heads. Leave enough room in designs for blooms to open fully. Also very popular in bridal and wedding work. Colours Peonies range in colour from pure white through baby pinks and palest peaches to clear deep pink and darkest rich maroon. There is also a pale yellow but it can be quite rare.
