You are here:Ginger : Flower FactsOriginsThe Zingiberaceae family includes about 40 genera of tropical gingers native to Indo-Malaysia, Indonesia, eastern Asia and Australia. Zingiber officinale, or commercial ginger, is grown and sold for its aromatic rhizomes, while other genera are grown for cut-flower use. Zingiber is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning "horn-shaped." Used in modern floral designs there are many different varieties of gingers each with it's own characteristics. Flower Availability and Vase LifeAll year round. 14-21 days. Care and HandlingGingers are cold sensitive. Do not expose to temperatures below 45 F. If flowers appear wilted, soak the entire stem and bracts in water at room temperature for 1/2 an hour, cut half and inch off the bottoms of the stems and place them in fresh clean water. Avoid direct sunlight and drafty areas.Re-mist the flower heads daily and repeat the whole process every 3 days if possible for maximum vase life. Florist Design UsesGinger has a strong vertical line and is often used to create height in arrangements. May need to use wire to secure stems when using them in floral foam.
