Delphinium : Flower Facts

Meaning

Flight of fancy; Ardent attachment

Origins

From the Latin "delphis" meaning dolphin, from the shape of the buds. Pronounced del-FINNY-um. Related to larkspur, which is smaller and comes in more pastel shades such as pinks. The plant is poisonous so wash hands after handling. Extracts of the plant has been used in herbal medicine. Often used as filler in arrangements. The juices of the flower will create blue ink when mixed with alum. The Delphinium is part of the Ranunculaceae family, includes more than 300 species of flowers native to the northern hemisphere

Most delphiniums are available all year round from domestic and international growers. The flowers are usually blue or lavender, but they also come in white, salmon and yellow. Delphiniums' vase life ranges from 7-14 days, depending on care-and-handling practices.
