Ginger : Flower Facts

Origins

The Zingiberaceae family includes about 40 genera of tropical gingers native to Indo-Malaysia, Indonesia, eastern Asia and Australia. Zingiber officinale, or commercial ginger, is grown and sold for its aromatic rhizomes, while other genera are grown for cut-flower use. Zingiber is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning "horn-shaped." Used in modern floral designs there are many different varieties of gingers each with it's own characteristics.

Flower Availability and Vase Life

Care and Handling

Gingers are cold sensitive. Do not expose to temperatures below 45 F. If flowers appear wilted, soak the entire stem and bracts in water at room temperature for 1/2 an hour, cut half and inch off the bottoms of the stems and place them in fresh clean water. Avoid direct sunlight and drafty areas.Re-mist the flower heads daily and repeat the whole process every 3 days if possible for maximum vase life.

Florist Design Uses

Ginger has a strong vertical line and is often used to create height in arrangements. May need to use wire to secure stems when using them in floral foam.
